This post is nothing more than sharing an experience I had with a cat back in January.

Jake, a black, middle-aged fairly large male cat is the topic of this post. However and admittedly, he, as subject, is also warming the waters for writing, again.

Through the first month of January, “Jakey Jake”, as I hear his Mother calling him, was my roommate. Having never had a cat nor was I familiar with the overall behaviors of such pets and/or my subsequent responsibilities, I was quite unsure and due to this, NOT necessarily looking forward to this babysitting gig. But, what is life without some risk and when his Mom, a dear friend, mentioned that she and her hubby were going out of town for the month of January, I offered to take him on or should I say, in. He had his work cut out for him investigating his new pad and, I suppose I did too trying to find out how to make him most comfortable. His attention to his environment began immediately as you can see however, not sure who is the most curious . . . him or us . . .

Well, the experience was fabulous, to put it mildly. It put the word, “cat” into my vocabulary . . . and thinking . . . As the days passed and his confidence grew, I was falling in love with him. Of course, as the host and caretaker, I took photos every day to send to his Mom and Dad letting them know their border was eating, sleeping, and seemingly enjoying his experience. So, out of the catch of photos, here are a few that I thought especially cute as well as serve as a nice memento of Jake, my January joy.

He even let me knit . . . to my surprise.

I have been acclimating myself to a home without a pet for some time, now. Always a dog owner, I never gave any consideration that a cat could possibly be another option for my future.

I love both your new posts Holly – so glad you are writing again and enjoying it! Jake looks like a real sweetie and also like he though about “helping” with your knitting, but then showed some restraint (gentleman that he is). I always enjoy seeing what you are thinking and what you are up to, here or on Rav.

Thank you so very much for your kind words. The comments I have received, including yours, have been so encouraging. I am dedicating 2024 to getting back to what I love doing. More writing to come and, of course, knitting too!

Jan! My family is returning! It’s been 20 years without family near. Very exciting for all of us. Jakey Jake is now back in his home but I hope for more babysitting gigs with him. I am sure a 6 month old pup would keep you very busy and entertained! I have lots of room for overnight guests, do consider reaching out! Thank you for your persistent and constant messages of love and family. I have always loved family first and that includes you !

It is confusing to me why I can’t fit in writing and knitting as easily in retirement as I could in employment. Please know I am trying, however. Thank you for your kindness! I hope you are well! And, yes, Happy Spring to you!
